Zhongwang 3D (ZW3D) has no compromise in performance, we need all its tools and even more.

In 2004, Russel Pescod, a partner at ULpower Aircraft Engines (), was working on a helicopter project. He had a problem. The simple performance was not what he and his collaborators hoped for. Years of time tried to improve the performance of the test light helicopters, and they began to doubt the engine of the aircraft, which was purchased from a third-party supplier and was the culprit. They tested the engine for performance and found that the horsepower of the engine was lower than what the manufacturer promised.

An important decision - let's build our own engine. "We need more motivation, so we have discussions with engine experts," Pescod said. “We found that there are two ways to improve engine power in front of us. We can buy an existing engine, open it, refit and rebuild, or we can build our own engine from scratch. Finally, we decided To design and build our own engine, because we can control all the unstable factors." The decision suggested that Pescod began looking for a suitable CAD software for designing a new aircraft engine. After extensive research, he chose ZW3D CAD/CAM. He said, "We have chosen ZW3D for the following reasons. First, we are a small company with limited resources, so we choose a cost-effective software. Second, ZW3D CAD/CAM has no compromise in performance, it has what we need All the tools, even more. Finally, the company hopes to support our project."

From the beginning to the design, it took a month to use ZW3D. "In less than a month, I used ZW3D to design a complete detail of the entire engine, and we tried to cut a model." Pescod said, "I designed I have my own parts library so that when I set their specific location, I can confirm that it fits seamlessly."

Using ZW3D software, Pescod is able to move a part at will to ensure that each part is properly assembled and aligned with each hole. Every tool in the software is very suitable when it comes to the engine. “The ability to simulate movements of pistons, connecting rods, crankshafts, cams, and valve trains makes it easy to check for interference between any component,” he said. “ZW3D allows us to optimize the engine design to fit the smallest possible space, save space and my weight,” which is extremely important for an aircraft engine. The mass attribute function is used to calculate the weight of individual parts, and it can be used to quickly get the weight of parts, even if we don't have physical objects. Another convenient feature is when Pescod designs the cylinder head with ZW3D, the air inlet is curved to make the air a “whirlpool”. One of the key measurements is that Pescod needs to know the thickness between the air inlet and the exhaust port. The wall is too thin, and the exhausted hot gas can dissolve it, causing catastrophic consequences. Fortunately, ZW3D is easy to obtain measurement data and adjust the wall thickness.

The dynamic section function is also very important to ensure that the cylinder head has enough material. Complex part area calculations are used for quotations for cylinder heads such as aluminum. Pescod pointed out that when building prototypes, "visibility" in ZW3D builds the power of the entire engine to help designers save money because it eliminates a lot of potential pitfalls in the process. He also pointed out that ZW3D can completely import design files into machining centers to process parts. This function is especially important for companies that are biased in design, because these companies can not enjoy the convenience of ZW3D integrated processing functions, and ZW3D's powerful export function is certain. The program makes up for this shortcoming. He also said that some customers asked them to design aircraft hoods to cover the engine, ZW3D is good at these difficult tasks.

From the day Pescod first sat in front of the computer to the first proof-of-concept prototype less than seven months ago, many of the light aircraft around the world today use the UL260i, the superior engine, and ZW3D to help build.
