Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, June 18th ("China Network Affairs" reporter Wang Meng, Zhang Zhilong) Every occurrence of the GM topic touches the public's sensitive nerves. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China approved the issuance of three GM soybean import safety certificates, which again caused widespread public concern.

Transgenic safety controversy has a long history

The reporter learned from the interview that the disputes over genetic modification in the domestic academic circles have been long-standing, and the "supporting faction" and the "opposition" are also very clear-cut. However, the Ministry of Agriculture's ban on "strictly prohibiting the planting of genetically modified crops" has been maintained, but China is gradually approving, like the United States, the European Union, Japan and other countries and regions, the relevant genetically modified products either for food processing or for feed processing. .

Dong Yingshan, a member of the National Team of Genetically Modified Technology Experts and Deputy Dean of the Jilin Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that the so-called GM technology uses biotechnology to separate a gene from one organism and implant it into another organism. So there is the "function" of implanting genes.

"Different from hybridization, hybridization can only be performed between species, and transgenes can be performed between completely different species. For example, insect-resistant transgenic plants can be transferred to the 'BT gene' that was originally present in bacteria. The plant itself produces insecticidal power."

In recent years, the most intense domestic genre of the genetic wave appeared in 2011. At that time, reports on genetically modified varieties and other reports about "illegally growing" genetically modified crops in the domestic provinces and cities and the "famous" corn hybrid variety "Xiyu 335" in the northeastern region caused a great impact in society. Some media even claimed that "transgenic corn "The mice were extinct, sows were aborted and even stillbirths. However, similar arguments have not confirmed that it is related to genetic modification. Some individuals and social groups that do not know the truth have played the slogan that “genetically modified foods will harm children and grandchildren” and hope to intervene in the process of promoting the use of genetically modified technology.

Experts said that although many countries and regions such as Europe, the United States, and Japan have approved the application of multiple varieties of genetically modified soybeans as early as in China, the debate on genetic modification also exists in the country. It can be said that genetically modified genetics is a global issue.

GM crops are not grown in large scale in China

Recently, in response to reports of illicit cultivation of GM crops in some areas, a joint investigation team composed of several relevant departments has conducted investigations in these areas twice.

Dong Yingshan said that the “illegal planting of genetically modified crops in the northeast region” is actually a trial planted by the agricultural departments of Liaoning and Jilin in the regional experimental areas set up by them. It is not a large-scale planting. "The agricultural sector puts together all kinds of species. These species are not only put in one place, but they must be distributed everywhere," he said.

Some experts said that these reports lacked factual basis. They said that the most important reason why the “Xuanzhuan” has caused social sensitivities is that the relevant government agencies have not made timely disclosure to the society of relevant GM technology research.

In fact, China approved GM soy imports in 2004. Genetically modified soybeans derived from "advanced" agricultural technologies such as Monsanto, Pioneer, and DuPont have continued to enter China and eventually entered the table in the form of soybean oil.

According to the annual report of ISAAA, in 2012, about 81% of the world's soybean production was genetically modified soybean. Therefore, soybeans grown in the traditional way are shrinking all over the world.

Is the transgenic "demonized"?

According to Wang Zhihua, chief soybean expert of Heilongjiang Province and deputy director of Hailun Agricultural Technology Promotion Center, the planting area of Heilongjiang soybean has been continuously reduced and yield has been greatly affected by relatively low planting income and planting structure adjustment policies in the past four years.

Wang Zhihua calculated an account, in 2012, according to an acre of about 1,000 kg of corn production, price 1.05 yuan / kg calculation, can be earned 1050 yuan; and the same land, such as changing soybeans, you can only produce about 260 kg With a calculation of 2.2 yuan per catty, planting soybeans will earn less than 600 yuan per mu.

According to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the General Administration of Customs, in 2012, domestic soybean production was approximately 13 million tons, and imported soybeans were approximately 60 million tons. The proportion of imported soybeans continued to increase. China's soybean imports accounted for 80% of the total. Even under policy protection, local production has been shrinking.

Liu Qi, a citizen of Changchun, said that when buying soybean oil from supermarkets, it was often seen on the label that “Northeast soybeans” were written, but soybean oil, now labelled “genetic raw materials for genetically modified soybeans,” has already dominated.

“As an ordinary citizen, what exactly is genetically modified? What will affect the health of adults and children? This is what we are most concerned about.” Liu Qi said. “As for the soybeans or other foods we eat, from which country, through What kind of approach to planting and producing, in fact, we do not care.”

Some agricultural experts who did not want to be named said that if they liberalize the import of genetically modified soybeans but do not let go of domestic cultivation, people may suspect that genetically modified soybeans are harmless and the cultivation may be harmful.

In the interview, the reporter learned that, in fact, the current government has shown a “cautious” attitude towards the planting of genetically modified food crops in China. On the one hand, the Ministry of Agriculture’s website has a section dedicated to genetically modified “speaking good things”, and even the column. Once occupied a prominent position, experts from the Ministry of Agriculture also showed obvious tendencies toward genetically modified technologies. On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture has always stressed that China has not approved the commercial cultivation of genetically modified food crops and has been very cautious about opening up the cultivation of genetically modified food crops. The caliber.

Experts said that there is indeed room for further improvement in the research and development of genetically modified technology and the approval process for varieties, especially the public’s right to know.

"You have to tell everyone that genetic modification is what you want to use?" one expert told reporters.
