A team of international scientists working on quantum computer technology based on diamond materials has announced that they have made a breakthrough in speculating on how to build basic computing units. At the heart of the research is the extremely pure single crystal diamond, which was developed by Element Six's technology department using its proprietary technology.

Quantum computer applications based on diamond materials use electrons to store data bits and use photons to read and control data bits. Diamond is considered to be a very promising material for real-time quantum information calculations at ambient temperatures. Applying other methods often requires complex and expensive cryogenic cooling systems.

This latest research comes from an EQUIND project that began in 2007. The three-year project focused on understanding whether certain optical properties in diamond can be used as a fundamental element in quantum computers and single-photon sources and is an integral part of the FET Open Fund project. The goal of the FET Open Fund project is to explore the potential of future and emerging technologies that will have an impact on society and industry.

The research team published an article in the recently published international authoritative scientific journal Nature-Physics, stating that their latest achievements demonstrate "all elements of quantum storage at room temperature". This means they can actually control and read information on a single computer and believe they can output data to registers.

This conclusion is expected to pave the way for a new computer design based on quantum mechanics. If successful, you can achieve a much faster computer and play an important role in deciphering complex code, retrieving large databases, and dealing with complex modeling problems. It is for this reason that governments and military fund organizations in many countries are supporting quantum computing research.

There is a nitrogen-vacancy defect in the diamond lattice. The electronics in this area form the basic computing unit and can be read by laser scanning. Element Six's technical department has developed ultra-high purity single crystal diamond crystals by applying chemical vapor deposition technology. This CVD diamond material provides strong support for the development of diamond structures with special properties required for quantum calculation.
