Mechanical processing plants around the world often face tool breakage problems during production. Identifying the location and cause of tool breakage is a challenge, and the additional factors of scrap, rework, machine downtime and delays further reduce productivity and increase costs.

Using the tool breakage detection system increases productivity and profitability, making waste, rework and machine downtime a thing of the past.

The traditional non-contact tool damage detection system determines whether the tool is normal according to whether the laser beam is blocked or not. When it is blocked, it indicates that the tool is normal; when it is not blocked, it indicates that the tool is damaged.

TRS1 is different. It has an advantage over other tool breakage detection systems because it not only checks for changes in light intensity. This new tool identification technology distinguishes between tools, coolants and chips, and is fast and reliable under actual machining conditions.

Renishaw's new system launches a laser beam onto a tool and monitors the reflected scattered light to determine if the tool is broken.

This identification process ensures that each tool is quickly detected at the beginning or end of the machining cycle.

The TRS1 is an all-in-one system with a laser source and detection electronics that can be mounted outside of the processing area to prevent collisions while saving valuable processing space.

The TRS1 can be mounted on any rigid surface of the machine because its relative position to the tool is not important. System setup is quick and easy because it does not require precise alignment with the machine axis.
The TRS1 system is a single-sided unit with excellent cost performance, speed and reliability. It can detect tools as small as f0.5mm. The tool stays in the laser beam for about 1 second. TRS1 uses software written specifically by Renishaw, which is included with the product.
The TRS1 system is capable of detecting all solid tools, including drills, taps, face tools, slot drills and ball end tools. This compact unit is capable of detecting tools from 0.3 m to 2.0 m apart and is suitable for a wide range of machine tools.
