New method to make carbon dioxide transform into carbon fiber

The conversion of man-made greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into a valuable commodity has always been the dream of scientists and government officials. Now, a research team at George Washington University in the United States has developed a technology that directly converts carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into carbon fiber that is very tight in both industrial and consumer fields, and is expected to promote the process of solving global warming.

According to the report of the Physicist Organization Network on the 19th, the team submitted this new study at the 250th National Conference and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The research leader, Stewart Licht of George Washington University, said: "We have discovered a way to use carbon dioxide enriched in the atmosphere to produce carbon nanofibers. This fiber can be made into a strong carbon-carbon composite material. For Boeing 787 Dreamliner, high-end sports equipment, wind turbine blades and a range of other products."

The researchers said that the study could turn carbon dioxide, which causes global warming, into the most popular carbon nanofiber manufacturing material. Licht called it a "diamond from the sky."

Licht said that their method is efficient, low-energy, requires only a few volts of electricity, has plenty of sunlight and a lot of carbon dioxide. The system uses electrolysis to synthesize nanofibers: Carbon dioxide nanofibers can be formed on steel electrodes by dissolving carbon dioxide through the heat and direct current of nickel and steel electrodes in a molten carbonate 750 degrees Celsius high-temperature electrolytic cell.

This system provides heat and electricity through a hybrid and highly efficient concentrating solar system. Licht estimated that the energy cost of this "solar thermal electrochemical process" is about 1,000 US dollars per ton of carbon fiber product, and the operating cost of the system is a few hundred times more than the output value.

He said: "We have calculated that in an area about one-tenth the size of the Sahara desert, this method can be used to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to the pre-industrial level within 10 years."

At present, the system is being tested. The biggest challenge facing researchers is how to accumulate experience and increase production capacity to produce nanofibers of the same size. Licht said: "We are rapidly expanding production and we should soon be able to produce a large amount of nanofibers within an hour." (Reporter Hualing)
