Although we have seen many materials designed to remove oil from water, many of them quickly become saturated and must be discarded. However, a new reusable membrane developed by scientists at Kobe University in Japan solved this problem by repelling oil instead of simply absorbing it. The positively charged bottom of the membrane is made of fine polyketone fibers. The substrate is very porous, making it easy for water to flow through.

On one side of the substrate, a negatively charged silica coating is applied. The layer is only 10 nanometers thick and has ultra-oleophobicity, which means it can repel oil. In addition, because it carries opposite charges to the substrate, they are pulled together through the electrostatic attraction process.

It is reported that once silica is placed in the upstream-facing flowing water, the membrane can repel 99.9% of oil droplets, even if the diameter is only 10 nanometers. And, although the oil still does accumulate on the membrane surface (it can be collected for reuse or disposal), it is not actually absorbed by the material, so it can be removed quickly and easily.

In laboratory tests, a 1 square meter membrane was able to treat 6000 liters of oily sewage in less than an hour. In addition, the material also shows resistance to a variety of acidic, alkaline, solvents and salt solutions.

Researchers now hope that once further developed, the technology can be used in applications such as the removal of offshore oil spills and wastewater treatment.
